Borneo

1 Island - 3 Countries - 4 States

Borneo is the third-largest island in the world and the largest in Asia.

=> This post is a chronological summary of my trip.

More pictures can be accessed at the end of each section
they are organized by topics.

1/ Malaysia - State of Sabah

I flew from Kuala Lumpur to Kota Kinabalu and waited a few days on a beautiful island for my Land Romer to arrive on a RoRo ship.

Boat trip to Labuan island

Labuan War Cemetery is a Commonwealth World War II graveyard. Many of the personnel buried in this cemetery, including Indian and Australian troops, were killed during the Japanese invasion of Borneo or the Borneo campaign of 1945. Others were prisoners of war in the region, including a number of those who perished on the infamous Sandakan Death Marches.

On the way to Semporna

Boat trip to Mabul island

2/ The Nation of Brunei

Because as 3 April 2019 Brunei implements stoning to death under anti-LGBT laws,
I decide to boycott the country, I choose to NOT visit sights
and simply drive through the country, as I have no other way to reach Sarawak…

3/ Malaysia - State of Sarawak

The Gunung Mulu National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site
that encompasses caves and karst formations
in a mountainous equatorial rainforest setting.

The park is famous for its caves and the expeditions that have been mounted to explore them and their surrounding rainforest, most notably the Royal Geographical Society Expedition of 1977–1978, which saw over 100 scientists in the field for 15 months.
The national park is named after Mount Mulu, the second highest mountain in Sarawak.

You can only access it by air!

Let's look carefully during the walk, there are small creepy insects...

The guide to Deer cave is the grand-son of Nyapan,
his mother is the little girl in the picture!

There are thought to be three million bats in Deer Cave.
At dusk, the bats stream into the fading light in huge formations.

The bat stream resembles a parade of army regiments; the troops emerge in batches, tens of thousands strong. Each battalion rises high into the air, swirling too and fro in long snake-like skeins before heading out over the jungle. This may be a defence against predators; bat-hawks wait on cliff ledges outside the cave or wheel overhead, hoping for an easy meal.
